Screen Contrast Ratio: What does it mean?

In this laptop radar article, I am about to explain everything about screen contrast ratio in layman’s terms. You might often have read a sentence like ABC screen has a contrast ratio of 1000:1. But, but what does it mean? Is it good or bad? So, we’re gonna see everything in detail.

In short about Screen Contrast Ratio

In very simple & short words, screen contrast means the ability of the screen to produce different colors that can be visible to the naked eye, both outdoors and indoors.

I think, the definition still looks weird, right? Don’t think much. See the below image and answer some of the questions.

Different colors with low and bright contrast

You can see 2 columns in the above image, and both consists of 4 colors.

On the left column, there are 4 colors and you can differentiate all of them very easily. And, the same applies to the right side column.

Now, look at the first color of the left column and the same of the right side column. You can see that the left one is too bright compared to the right one. Now, try to look at it in direct sunlight.

If visible properly without stressing your eyes, means, your laptop’s display has a good screen contrast ratio. And if not, then I’m worried about it. Because it lacks something.

Now, look at how to define it.

The screen contrast ratio is defined as the ratio of the brightest light emitted by the screen to the darkest spot created.

Visible Difference Between Good and Bad Screen Contrast Ratio

There’s a clear difference between the display of good and bad contrast ratio.

See the below image. The display on the left side shown in the below image has a good contrast ratio compared to the right.

What Should it be with Respect to Display Panel?

The contrast ratio always differs within the types of devices.

In laptops and monitors, it depends on the type of display panel and, it’s very limited. But, the ideal results are as follows.

  • For TN and IPS panels: 1000:1
  • For VA panel: 3000:1

See, mobile devices have a pretty higher screen contrast ratio, says 1000000:1, which means, you will be able to get better and more accurate dark spots.

How we measure it at LaptopRadar. In?

Measurement of the screen contrast ratio involves the special-dark laboratory. It also involves the custom environment to set up.

At LaptopRadar. In, we don’t measure it. The data of the screen contrast ratio that we provide in our review articles are from the manufacturer’s website.
