Where to buy?

The Build Quality

The HP 14s DR1009TU laptop is made of all-plastic. But, it's pretty solid to withstand the flex. The design however falls towards more classic side. It doesn't reflect a kind of premium look.

In addition, fingerprints easily show up on the smooth matte silver finish. But, I found it easy to clean using a micro-fiber cloth. Also, I haven't noticed any colour-change on the surface over-the-long-use. In many laptops, I found the white surface turned yellowish at some parts over the use. But, that's not the case with this HP laptop.

Dimensions and Weight

The dimensions of this HP 14s DR1009TU are 12.7-inch in width, 8.8-inch in depth, and 0.7-inch in height. In addition to that, I have also measured the weight using Propert's weighing scale.

  • For laptop only: 1.46 kg (3.22 lbs)
  • For laptop + Accessories: 1.69 kg (3.7 lbs)

Here, I have checked the laptop's weight is its charging accessories, so that, you can get an idea about the total weight you may need to carry while travelling. When compared it with other laptops under Rs 60,000 in India, I found this HP 14s DR1009TU light in weight. At LaptopRadar. In, we consider laptop below 1.5Kg lightweight.

Display

14-inch FHD IPS display of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

The HP 14s DR1009TU laptop has 14-inch FHD Display with IPS panel. It has 60Hz refresh rate and surrounded by 6.5mm side bezels to offer you possible more screen-to-body ratio. The screen contrast ratio is 1400:1, which is very good. At LaptopRadar. In, we recommend at least 1000:1 of contrast ratio. It really delivers good viewing angles.

In case of this laptop, I have no option to check for G-Sync availability because it has no NVIDIA GPU. It's not a dedicated gaming laptop. But, it can fulfil your gaming needs up to certain limit.

To check the screen colour reproduction, I have tested screen colour gamut using Spyder 5 PRO. And, here are our results of 3 tests for SRGB, AdobeRGB, and NTSC.

screen colour gamut of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

As you can see the screen colour gamut are not impressive for content creators like photo and video editors. But, perfectly fine for office-level jobs, students, programmers, and bloggers.

See in the below chart where this laptop in the comparison of other laptops of price under Rs 60,000.

HP 14s DR1009TU laptop screen colour gamut compared with other laptops of price under Rs 60K.

As you can see that our HP one is at the middle.

In addition to that, I have also tested the brightness of this laptop in terms of display nits. And, here are my results.

Display Nits of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop at difference brightness levels.

So, At LaptopRadar. In, our review unit has reached almost 245 nits, which is very far-below from the minimum value we recommend (290-300 nits).

When compared it with other laptops under Rs 60,000 price, HP 14s DR1009TU has secured middle position and that's not bad but not impressive also.

HP 14s DR1009TU laptop's display nits compared with other laptops of price under Rs 60K.

When I have intentionally moved the screen up and down using fingers, I found a little bit of flex there. But, despite display lid is made of plastic, I found it not problematic. In addition to that, the hinge runs mostly along the base. And, that also contributes to the flex reduction.

It is to note that the hinge doesn't allow you turn the display 180-degree. In addition, I failed when I have tried to open the display with one finger. That shows the uneven distribution of weight across the hinge.

Keyboard

Keyboard of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

The keyboard of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop has a plastic island. When I have pressed it down hard using fingers, I found a little bit of flex there. But, to be frank, it wasn't problematic. Even during aggressive typing, it has gone well.

The keys are made of plastic and have silver background with gray fonts. At LaptopRadar. In, we recommend black keys with white fonts for faster visibility of keys during typing.

Backlit of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop's keyboard.

The keyboard has white zonal backlit. But, it's dim compared to other laptops I have tested.

When it comes to typing experience, the keys have delivered 1.45mm of travel distance but weren't consistent in tactile feedback. At LaptopRadar. In, we recommend at least 1.5mm of travel distance for better tactile feedback.

However, the keys are a little bit noisy but you will find them considerably silent when compared to the mechanical keyboards.

The 2 arrow keys are smaller in size and also very closely placed. That can trigger accidental wrong press.

If I compare it with Mi Notebook 14 Horizon, Acer Swift 3 SF314-57, Asus VivoBook S14 S403JA, then this one will definitely go down.

Touchpad

The 4.1-inch precision-enabled touchpad of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

The 4.1-inch touchpad is made of plastic material. It's smooth and responsive. But, I'm worried that despite being Windows Precision-enabled, it's not accurate to gestures like zoom and rotate.

Furthermore, it doesn't click down anywhere. It has two separate buttons integrate at the bottom. When you press it, the buttons produce the bit audible sound. However, for gaming, it's not a good. You have to buy a dedicated gaming mouse.

RAM

The HP 14s DR1009TU laptop comes with 8GB of 2666MHz DDR4 Double Channel RAM. And, it's upgradable to 16GB. Also note that there's no extra slot for the upgrade, so you need to buy either 12GB or 16GB of RAM and replace with the existing one.

In addition to that, below I have compared it with the RAM of other laptops of Rs 60,000.

  • Mi Notebook 14 Horizon: 8GB DDR4 | 2666MHz | Single Channel | No upgrade option (read full review)
  • Acer Swift 3 SF314-57: 8GB DDR4 | 2400MHz | Dual channel | Upgradable up to 32GB (read review)

  • Dell Inspiron 14 3493: 8GB DDR4 | 2666MHz | Single channel | Not upgradable
  • Acer Aspire 3 A315-23: 8GB DDR4 | 2666MHz | Single channel | Upgradable to 12GB

CPU and GPU Performance

The Intel Core i5-1035G1 CPU from Ice Lake family and Intel Integrated UHD GPU is powering the laptop's performance. In addition, it got 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. So that, you will be able to open and edit large files smoothly.

CPU and GPU Benchmarks

To check the performance CPU, I have conducted the Cinebench tests. Cinebench score represents the CPU's performance.

Cinebench R20 single and multi core scores of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

As you can see that the cooling pad hasn't increased the CB score even a bit. But, the 0.15v CPU undervolting has increased the CB multi core score from 1098 to 1113. It directly indicates that CPU undervolting is impacting much on the laptop's performance.

In addition to that, see in the below where this HP 14s DR1009TU is, when compared to other laptops of price nearly Rs 60,000.

HP 14s DR1009TU laptop Cinebench R20 single core score compared with other laptops of price under Rs 60K.

So, in the CB single core score comparison, the HP 14s DR1009TU has did a a bit disappointing job. It's at 3rd-last position.

In addition, I have also checked Geekbench 5 benchmark performance.

Geekbench 5 benchmark for HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

In a test by Geekbench 5, the HP 14s DR1009TU laptop has achieved 1034 score on single core and 3189 score on multi core. See where it's when compared with other laptops under Rs 60,000.

Geekbench 5 single core score of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop compared with other laptops of price under Rs 60K.

You can see our HP laptop is at good but impressive position in the GB single core score comparison.

Now, what does this scores tell?

It tells the performance of the laptop. The higher the score, the higher the performance. Here, you have to consider the multi-core score. Take a note that, Geekbench doesn’t put an excessive load on the CPU like Cinebench R20. And, Geekbench considers mainly productivity tasks like emailing, browsing, multitasking, and etc, to evaluate the hardware.

And, these ways cannot give you an idea about the cooling solution. Because tiny tasks don’t make much stress on the CPU. Hence, If the laptop has a higher Geekbench multi-core score means its capability for productivity is much better. But, at the same time, information about thermal throttling and the cooling solution will remain unanswered by this tool.

Average CPU and GPU Clock Speeds

The HP 14s DR1009TU has Intel Core i5-1035G1 which has a base speed of 1.0GHz and can be overclocked to 3.6GHz.

The average CPU and GPU clock speeds were measured by performing the stress test using AIDA64 tool. The average of 3 runs is in the below image.

Average CPU clock speeds of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop during various modes of stress test.

During the stress test at auto fan and with the use of cooling pad, the clock speed hasn't raised noticeably. But, with 0.15v CPU undervolting, the speed has raised to 2415MHz, which is quite impressive. It gives you an idea that cooling pad is completely useless to buy for this laptop for performance increment.

Furthermore, as HP 14s DR1009TU is not a gaming laptop, I don't have to check it for TDP as it isn't required here. I would have done it if this was a gaming laptop.

Video Editing Performance

In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.

Video export benchmarks of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

So, during my test of video export in 4K preset, the Lenovo laptop has ended up in on average 35 minutes and 14 seconds. That’s too much.

Video export time of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop compared with other laptops of price under Rs 60K.

I'm very much disappointed because of performance during video export. Till now, I have criticised the Mi Notebook 14, but I think I've to praise it in this section. Also, it's worth to mention that Lenovo laptop wasn't all-time smooth during video editing.

Thermal Performance

I've performed the thermal performance test using AIDA64 tool to check whether a cooling pad is useful in temperature reduction or not.

Average CPU temperature of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop during various modes of stress test.

As you can see that the cooling pad has shown a very negligible effect in temperature reduction. But, the CPU undervolting has reduced the temperature from 78 to 74.2, which is pretty good.

In addition, I have also checked for laptop's exterior temperature.

  • At idle: Keyboard and palm rest were cool.
  • During stress test at auto fan: Palm rest was cool and Keyboard was at mid 40 degrees C. The exterior above the function keys was hot.
  • With the use of cooling pad: The same results to just above test.

Noise Emitted by Fans

Fan noise of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

At idle, the fan was completely silent. But, during stress test at auto fan, the noise level was increased like crazy - 49.6dB.

In addition, also find HP's position in terms of fan noise emission when compared to laptops of price under Rs 60,000.

Look at our laptop's position, it's at 3rd-last position. Too bad.

You can see in the above chart that Acer Swift 3 SF314-57 comes with the most silent fan whereas Dell Inspiron 14 3493 has the most noisy fan when I ran the stress test at auto fan.

Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera and microphone are placed at the top bezel of the display. When tested both outdoor, I found both are little below-average in terms of quality. The camera also doesn't support Windows Hello unlock.

Speakers

The top-firing speakers are placed at the top of the keyboard. The sound comes out from the holes made at the top of keyboard. When I have tested the sound level while YouTube videos were on, the Digitech has shown 72dB of reading. In addition to that, the speakers also feel a bit tiny.

On the back, there are only air exhausts. And, on the back cover, it has air intake vents. But, in the thermal test has revealed that they're useless even when I have used a cooling pad.

Battery

The HP 14s DR1009TU laptop has 41Wh battery.

It has lasted for 74 minutes during the continuous stress test and for 389 minutes while watching YouTube videos at 50% of screen brightness, keyboard backlightings off, and background apps disabled.

Battery life of HP 14s DR1009TU laptop.

Storage

Let me tell you that this HP 14s DR1009TU has a 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. I have measured its speed and performance using CrystalDiskMark. CrystalDiskMark is a tool most popular for the measurement of storage's performance.

HP 14s DR1009TU laptop SSD Storage speed test results by CrystalDiskMark.

You can see that it's too fast at reading and writing. The reading speed is almost 1583MB/sec and writing speed is almost 1487MB/sec.

Furthermore, neither this laptop is capable of gaming nor, it has at least NVIDIA’s MX series GPU. So, I have skipped testing the gaming benchmarks.

Final Thoughts

The HP 14s DR1009TU laptop is not much feature-rich. It falls on the classic design. The build is all-plastic but pretty solid and sturdy enough. The display has IPS panel that delivers pretty good viewing angles and has pretty good contrast ratio. In addition, the keyboard is not tactile. The touchpad is smooth and responsive. The surprising thing is that despite being precision-enabled, it's not accurate for zoom and rotate gestures. The performance is on the boundary-line. It has no dedicated graphics card. So, it can't fulfil your smooth gaming needs. The camera and microphone are below-average in quality. Therefore, it's not good for video conference. What I like is the USB Type-C port inside it. The speakers are not enough-loud. But, sounds okay. The 512GB of SSD storage is much faster at reading and writing of files. Overall, an entry-level classic-design laptop at a very cheap price in India.
