Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Build Quality

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has an all-plastic body. But, it’s pretty solid and sturdy enough. The design is a mix of modern and classic looks. It’s attractive.

In addition, the fingerprints do show up on the smooth matte silver finish. But, you can easily clean it using a microfiber cloth. And, I have also noticed no colour change in the surface even after long continuous use.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Dimensions and Weight

The dimensions of this Lenovo IdeaPad S145 are 13.4 inches in width, 10 inches in depth, and 0.8 inches in height. In addition to that, I have also measured the weight using Propert’s weighing scale.

  • Laptop only: 1.85 kg (4 lbs)
  • Laptop + Accessories: 1.935 kg (4.3 lbs)

Here, I have checked the laptop’s weight is its charging accessories, so that, you can get an idea about the total weight you may need to carry while travelling. When compared with other laptops under Rs 60,000 in India, I found this IdeaPad S145 a bit heavy. At LaptopRadar. In, we consider laptops below 1.5 kg lightweight.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Display

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Display
Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Display

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 laptop has a 15.6-inch FHD display with a 60Hz refresh rate. In addition, it delivers a few bad viewing angles because of the VA panel.

The screen contrast ratio is 1100:1, which is higher than our lower recommendation (1000:1). The display is surrounded by 7.5mm side bezels to make you feel more premium and also gives you a higher screen-to-body ratio.

In the case of this laptop, I have no option to check for G-Sync availability because it has no NVIDIA GPU. It’s not a dedicated gaming laptop. But, it can fulfil your gaming needs up to a certain limit.

To check the screen colour reproduction, I have tested the screen colour gamut using Spyder 5 PRO. And, here are our results of 3 tests for SRGB, AdobeRGB, and NTSC.

As you can see the screen colour gamut are not impressive for content creators like photo and video editors. But, perfectly fine for office-level jobs, students, programmers, and bloggers.

See the below chart where this laptop is in comparison to other laptops of price under Rs 60,000.

As you can see our dear Lenovo IdeaPad came second-last in the comparison. Too bad.

In addition to that, I have also tested the brightness of this laptop in terms of display nits. And, here are my results for Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Display Nits.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Display Nits

So, At LaptopRadar. In, our review unit has reached almost 227 nits, which is very far-below below the minimum value we recommend (290-300 nits).

When compared with other laptops under Rs 60,000 price, Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has secured fourth-last position and that’s pretty disappointing.

To check the screen flex, I intentionally moved the screen up and down using my fingers. I found a little bit of flex there but, to be frank, it wasn’t an issue for me.

180-degree hinge of Lenovo IdeaPad S145
180-Degree hinge of Lenovo IdeaPad S145

In addition, the hinge runs mostly along the base, which is also responsible for a minimum amount of screen flex. And, it also allows you to turn the display 180 degrees right back to the keyboard.

It is noted that I got success when I tried to open the display with one finger. That shows the even distribution of weight across the hinge.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Keyboard

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Keyboard
Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Keyboard

The keyboard of Lenovo IdeaPad S145 laptop has a plastic island. So, it’s not as strong as a metal one but pretty sturdy and solid enough. There is a little flex when I have pressed it down hard using my fingers. But, to be frank, it’s not problematic for me.

In addition, the keyboard has no backlit. So, you may have to face problems while typing in the low-light room.

Typing on the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 keyboard
Typing on the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 keyboard

When it comes to typing experience, I found the keys were not giving tactile feedback and travelling inconsistent distance between 1.2 to 1.4mm. In addition, the “Power” button is placed next to the “Next Play” button. So, you may hit it frequently while typing. But that won’t be an issue since you have to long-press it to execute the function assigned to it.

In addition, the keyboard has got two small up and down arrow keys, which are also incorrectly placed. Overall, this full-size keyboard isn’t good but rather falls on the disappointing side.

If I compare it with Mi Notebook 14 HorizonAcer Swift 3 SF314-57Asus VivoBook S14 S403JA, then this one will definitely go down.

The 4.5-inch wider touchpad of the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 laptop is made of plastic. It’s smooth, responsive, and accurate. But, it doesn’t support Windows precision drivers.

It clicks anywhere hence it has no separate button for left and right clicks. In addition, it bends more when pressed, but it’s not problematic. However, for gaming, it’s not good. You have to buy a dedicated gaming mouse.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 RAM

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 laptop comes with 8GB of 2400MHz DDR4 Single Channel RAM. And, it’s upgradable to 12GB.

In addition to that, below I have compared it with the RAM of other laptops of Rs 60,000.

  • Mi Notebook 14 Horizon: 8GB DDR4 | 2666MHz | Single Channel | No upgrade option (read full review)
  • Acer Swift 3 SF314-57: 8GB DDR4 | 2400MHz | Dual channel | Upgradable up to 32GB (read review)

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 CPU and GPU Performance

The Intel Core i5-1035G1 CPU from the Ice Lake family and Intel shared GPU are powering the laptop’s performance. In addition, it got 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. So that, you will be able to open and edit large files smoothly.

CPU and GPU Benchmarks

To check the performance CPU, I have conducted the Cinebench tests. Cinebench score represents the CPU’s performance.

You Know: What is Cinebench?

Cinebench R20 Scores Lenovo IdeaPad S145
Cinebench R20 Scores Lenovo IdeaPad S145

During the Cinebench R20 test with and without a cooling pad, I found no considerable change. It directly indicates that the cooling pad isn’t effective in the performance increment of the laptop.

In addition to that, see below where this Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is when compared to other laptops at a price of nearly Rs 60,000.

Cinebench R20 Single Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145
Cinebench R20 Single Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145

So, in the CB single core score comparison, the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has done a remarkable job. It’s in 2nd position.

Cinebench R20 Multi Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145
Cinebench R20 Multi Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145

So, in the CB multi core score comparison, our review unit has reached 4th position, which is outstanding. Such a great position reflects the good internals and a pretty efficient cooling solution.

In addition, I have also checked Geekbench 5 benchmark performance.

Geekbench 5 Scores Lenovo IdeaPad S145
Geekbench 5 Scores Lenovo IdeaPad S145

In a test by Geekbench 5, the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 laptop has achieved a 1069 score on single core and a 3851 score on multi core. See where it’s when compared with other laptops under Rs 60,000.

Geekbench 5 Single Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145
Geekbench 5 Single Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145

So, our dear Lenovo laptop is at good position when it comes to Geekbench 5 Single core comparison. Despite the same processor, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon (Laptop review), Asus VivoBook 15 M513, and Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 have shown poor performance.

Geekbench 5 Multi Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145
Geekbench 5 Multi Core Score Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145

Again, the IdeaPad S145 has impressed me.

Now, what do these scores tell?

It tells the performance of the laptop. The higher the score, the higher the performance. Here, you have to consider the multi-core score. Take note that, Geekbench doesn’t put an excessive load on the CPU like Cinebench R20. And, Geekbench considers mainly productivity tasks like emailing, browsing, multitasking, etc, to evaluate the hardware.

And, these ways cannot give you an idea about the cooling solution. Because tiny tasks don’t make much stress on the CPU. Hence, If the laptop has a higher Geekbench multi-core score means its capability for productivity is much better. But, at the same time, information about thermal throttling and the cooling solution will remain unanswered by this tool.

Average CPU and GPU Clock Speeds

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has Intel Core i5-1035G1 which has a base speed of 1.0GHz and can be overclocked to 3.6GHz.

The average CPU and GPU clock speeds were measured by performing the stress test using AIDA64 tool. The average of 3 runs is in the below image.

Also Read: Aida64 Stress Test

During the stress test at the auto fan with and without a cooling pad, the CPU speed was 3376MHz. Again, no change has been detected in performance because of the cooling pad. It gives you an idea that a cooling pad is completely useless to buy for this laptop for performance increment.

Furthermore, as Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is not a gaming laptop, I don’t have to check it for TDP as it isn’t required here. I would have done it if this was a gaming laptop.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Video Editing Performance

In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.

Video Export Benchmarks Lenovo IdeaPad S145
Video Export Benchmarks Lenovo IdeaPad S145

So, during my test of video export in 4K preset, the Lenovo laptop ended up in on average 30 minutes and 41 seconds. That’s too much.

Video Export Time Comparison Lenovo IdeaPad S145

I’m much disappointed because of the performance during the video export. Till now, I have criticised the Mi Notebook, but I think I’ve to praise it in this section. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the Lenovo laptop wasn’t all-time smooth during video editing.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Thermal Performance

I’ve performed the thermal performance test using the AIDA64 tool to check whether a cooling pad is useful in temperature reduction or not.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Thermal Performance
Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Thermal Performance

Again, the cooling pad has shown zero effect on the temperature reduction. It indicates that no cooling pads are made for this IdeaPad S145. That’s the only outcome of this test.

Furthermore, in the following chart, I have compared the temperatures of laptops measured during a stress test at an auto fan.

CPU Temperatures Compared Lenovo IdeaPad S145
CPU Temperatures Compared Lenovo IdeaPad S145

In the CPU temperature comparison, this laptop is found at the second-last position. That also reflects a little bit of inefficient thermal management.

In addition, I have also checked for the laptop’s exterior temperature.

  • At idle: The keyboard and palm rest were cool.
  • During the stress test at the auto fan: the Palm rest was cool and the Keyboard was at mid-40 degrees C. The exterior above the function keys was hot.
  • With the use of a cooling pad: The same results as just the above test.

Lenovo IdeaPad Noise Emitted by Fans

Fans Noise Lenovo IdeaPad S145

At idle, the fan was completely silent. But, during the stress test at the auto fan, the noise level was increased like a blast – 47.1dB.

In addition, also find Lenovo’s position in terms of fan noise emission when compared to laptops of price under Rs 60,000.

Although the position of IdeaPad is 3rd, it’s still not good.

You can see in the above chart that Acer Swift 3 SF314-57 comes with the most silent fan whereas Dell Inspiron 14 3493 has the most noisy fan when I ran the stress test at auto fan.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Camera and Microphone

The 720p camera and microphone are placed at the top bezel of the display. When tested outdoors, I found both are average in quality. Both got ratings of 5 out of 10. In addition, the camera of this laptop also doesn’t support Windows Hello unlock.

Here is the position of this IdeaPad S145 when compared with other laptops of Rs 60,000 price.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Speakers

The 2 down-firing speakers are placed underneath the laptop’s front side. They sound below average. When I tested the sound level while YouTube videos were on, the Digitech has shown 86dB of reading. In addition to that, the speakers also feel a bit tiny.

  • 1 3.5mm audio/combo jack
  • 1 Full-size SD card reader

On the back, there are only air exhausts. And, on the back cover, it has air intake vents. But, the thermal test has revealed that they’re useless even when I have used a cooling pad.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Battery

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 laptop has a 35Wh battery.

It lasted for 52 minutes during the continuous stress test and for 265 minutes while watching YouTube videos at 50% of screen brightness, with keyboard backlighting off, and background apps disabled.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Storage

Let me tell you that this Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. I have measured its speed and performance using CrystalDiskMark. CrystalDiskMark is a tool most popular for the measurement of storage performance.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145 Storage
IdeaPad S145 Storage

You can see that it’s too fast at reading and writing. The reading speed is almost 1589MB/sec and the writing speed is almost 862MB/sec.

Furthermore, neither this laptop is capable of gaming nor, it has at least NVIDIA’s MX series GPU. So, I have skipped testing the gaming benchmarks.

Final Thoughts for Lenovo IdeaPad S145

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is a classic design and all-plastic build laptop. It’s a bit heavy but offers good performance when tested using several standard benchmarks like Cinebench R20 and Geekbench 5. It’s good for programmers when it comes to performance. But, the keyboard is disappointing. The touchpad is normal but doesn’t support Windows precision drivers, which should be for a laptop under Rs 60,000 price. The display has no IPS panel and therefore lacks good viewing angles. However, I’m impressed with its contrast ratio. The laptop has no dedicated graphics, which means, it’s certainly not able to fulfil your gaming need. The speakers are enough loud. For video conferences, this Lenovo IdeaPad S145 has an average-quality camera and microphone. In addition, it has not even a USB Type-C port, which has really scared me. Overall, this laptop is an entry-level machine.
