I just received the MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop and reviewed it. I found a lot of good things about it. In this laptop radar article, I am gonna share everything about that. So, let’s get started.

The Build Quality
The all-aluminium build of MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop.
The MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop has an all-aluminium build. It is pretty solid and sturdy enough. The design is pretty lucrative. It reflects a pretty modern look.
The smooth matte finish easily attracts fingerprints. But, you can easily clean it using a micro-fibre cloth. In addition, I found no surface colour change over the use.
Dimensions and Weight
The dimensions of this MSI Modern 14 B4MW are 12.6-inch in width, 8.7-inch in depth, and 0.7-inch in height. In addition to that, I have also measured the weight using Propert’s weighing scale.

- For laptop + Accessories: 1.6 kg (3.5 lbs)
Here, I have checked the laptop’s weight is its charging accessories, so that, you can get an idea about the total weight you may need to carry while traveling. When comparing it with other laptops under Rs 60,000 in India, I found this MSI Modern 14 B4MW the most lightweight.
MSI Modern 14 Display
The MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop has a 14-inch FHD display with a 60Hz refresh rate. In addition, it delivers good viewing angles, thanks to the IPS panel. The screen contrast ratio is 1100:1, which is higher than our lower recommendation (1000:1). The MSI Modern 14 Display is surrounded by 3.5mm side bezels to make you feel more premium and also gives you a higher screen-to-body ratio.
In the case of this laptop, I have no option to check for G-Sync availability because it has no NVIDIA GPU. It’s not a dedicated gaming laptop. But, it can fulfil your gaming needs up to the certain limit.
To check the screen colour reproduction, I have tested the screen colour gamut using Spyder 5 PRO. And, here are our results of 3 tests for SRGB, AdobeRGB, and NTSC.

As you can see the screen colour gamut are not good for content creators like photo and video editors. But, perfectly fine for students, office-level jobs, programmers, bloggers, watching movies, and many more.

In addition to that, To check the screen flex, I have intentionally moved the screen up and down using my fingers. I found a little bit of flex there but, to be frank, it wasn’t an issue for me. MSI has an all-device of aluminium metal, which contributes more in durability and lowers the weight possibly.
In addition, the hinge runs mostly along the base, which is also responsible for the minimum amount of screen flex. Unlike Acer Swift 3 SF314-57, the hinge of this laptop doesn’t allow the display to rotate 180-degree right back to the keyboard.
It is to note that I failed when I tried to open the display with one finger. That shows the uneven distribution of weight across the hinge.
Keyboard
The keyboard of MSI Modern 14 B4MW has an all-aluminium island. When pressed it hard using my fingers downside, I found a little bit of flex there. But, it wasn’t problematic, not even during aggressive typing.
The keys have a black background and white fonts, which we mostly recommend at LaptopRadar.In. In addition, the keys are flat.
When it comes to typing experience, it’s really pretty good. The keys were travelling a 1.5mm distance and giving me consistent tactile feedback.
In addition, no keys on the keyboard are small or incorrectly placed. That impressed me.
Furthermore, the keyboard has a white zonal backlit. And, the brightness is pretty good-enough to illuminate the secondary functions also.
Overall, the keyboard is quite good compared to other laptops I have tested like Acer Swift 3 SF314-57, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon, Asus VivoBook S14 S403JA, Acer Aspire 5 A514-52G, and many more.

Touchpad
The touchpad of the MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop is 4.1-inch wide. It’s smooth, responsive, and accurate. In addition, it’s Windows recognized precision unit.
It has no separate buttons since it clicks down anywhere. Unlike Mi Notebook 14’s failed touchpad, this one doesn’t get bend down much when pressed.
However, for gaming, it’s not good. You have to buy a dedicated gaming mouse.
RAM
The MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop has 8GB of 3200MHz DDR4 Double channel RAM. The amount is quite big for smooth multitasking. In addition, MSI is also giving you the option to upgrade the RAM to 64GB and that’s outstanding. No laptops of price under Rs 60,000 is offering such a huge upgrade to the RAM.

CPU and GPU Performance
The AMD’s 4th Gen Ryzen 5-4500U processor and Radeon RX Vega 6 graphics are powering the laptop’s performance. In addition, the MSI Modern 14 B4MW has 512GB of SSD storage for much faster file reading and writing.
CPU and GPU Benchmarks
To check the performance CPU, I have conducted the Cinebench tests. Cinebench score represents the CPU’s performance.
During my tests, I found that the cooling pad is a little bit useful in performance increment. But, the 0.15v CPU undervolting has made a huge increment. It has increased the CB R20 multi-core score from 2103 to 2129.
That directly shows the positive impact of CPU undervolting laptop’s performance. And, it’s also a bit worthy to buy a cooling pad for this MSI laptop.
In addition to that, see below where this MSI Modern 14 B4MW is when compared to other laptops of price nearly Rs 60,000.

In addition, I have also checked Geekbench 5 benchmark performance.
In a test by Geekbench 5, the MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop has achieved 1213 score on single core and 4189 score on multi core.

So, the MSI Modern 14 B4MW has impressed me in Geekbench 5 comparison.
Now, what do these scores tell?
It tells the performance of the laptop. The higher the score, the higher the performance. Here, you have to consider the multi-core score. Take note that, Geekbench doesn’t put an excessive load on the CPU like Cinebench R20. And, Geekbench considers mainly productivity tasks like emailing, browsing, multitasking, etc, to evaluate the hardware.
And, these ways cannot give you an idea about the cooling solution. Because tiny tasks don’t make much stress on the CPU. Hence, If the laptop has a higher Geekbench multi-core score means its capability for productivity is much better. But, at the same time, information about thermal throttling and the cooling solution will remain unanswered by this tool.
Average CPU and GPU Clock Speeds
The MSI Modern 14 B4MW has AMD Ryzen 5-4500U which has a base speed of 2.3GHz and can be overclocked to 4GHz.
The average CPU and GPU clock speeds were measured by performing the stress test using the AIDA64 tool. The average of 3 runs is in the below image.
During the stress test at the auto fan, the MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop reached 3010MHz clock speed. When the cooling pad was used, the clock speed was raised to 3021MHz. And, with 0.15v CPU undervolting, the clock speed has raised to 3275MHz, which is a considerable change.
So, it can be seen that CPU undervolting affects much. And, the cooling pad is also helping a bit.
Furthermore, as MSI Modern 14 B4MW is not a gaming laptop, I don’t have to check it for TDP as it isn’t required here. I would have done it if this was a gaming laptop.
3DMark Score Comparison
Video Editing Performance
In this test, I have exported the 16 minutes and 13 seconds long video in YouTube 4K H.264 preset using Adobe Premier CC. And I have repeated the same test 4 times further to show you the average result.
So, during my test of video export in 4K preset, the Acer laptop has ended up in on average 29 minutes and 12 seconds. That’s too much.
I’m a little bit disappointed because of the performance during the video export. Till now, I have criticised the Mi Notebook, but I think I’ve to praise it in this section. Also, it’s worth mentioning that MSI Modern laptop wasn’t all-time smooth during video editing.
Thermal Performance
I’ve performed the thermal performance test using the AIDA64 tool to check whether a cooling pad is useful in temperature reduction or not.
So, you can see that the cooling pad is pretty able to reduce the temperature from 81 to 79 degrees Celsius, which is good. In addition, the stress test with 0.15v CPU undervolting has reduced the temperature from 81 to 75.8 degrees Celsius, which is remarkable.
Furthermore, in the following chart, I have compared the temperatures of laptops measured during the stress test at an auto fan.
As you can see, the MSI Modern 14 B4MW has a little bit of well-maintained CPU temperature. It’s a good job done by efficient internals and cooling system.
In addition, I have also checked for the laptop’s exterior temperature.
- At idle: The keyboard and palm rest were cool.
- During the stress test at the auto fan: The palm rest was cool and Keyboard was at mid-50 degrees C. The exterior above the function keys was hot.
- With the use of a cooling pad: Not different results to just above test.
Noise Emitted by Fans
At idle, the fan was completely silent. But, during the stress test at the auto fan, the noise level increased like crazy – 51.2dB.
In addition, also find MSI’s position in terms of fan noise emission when compared to laptops of price under Rs 60,000.
You can see in the above chart that Acer Swift 3 SF314-57 comes with the most silent fan whereas MSI Modern 14 B4MW has the most noisy fan when I ran the stress test at the auto fan.
Camera and Microphone
The 720p camera of MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop is found pretty average in terms of quality. I have tested it outdoors and it has performed well. In addition, the microphone has also captured a nearly clean voice outdoors. Overall, I have rated the camera 5/10 and the microphone 5/10. It’s to note that the camera doesn’t support Windows Hello unlock here.

Speakers
The 2 down-firing speakers are placed on the sides near to front underneath the laptop. They sound average in terms of loudness. When I have tested the sound level while YouTube videos were on, the Digitech has shown 80dB of reading. In addition to that, the speakers also feel a bit tiny.
Ports
On the left side, there are the following ports from left to right.

- 1 HDMI (4K at 30Hz)
- 1 USB 3.2 Gen-1 Type-C
- 1 Micro SD card reader
On the right side, there are the following ports from left to right.
- 1 Audio combo jack
- 2 USB 2.0 Type-A
On the back, there are only air exhausts. And, on the back cover, there is many air intake vents. Too much. And, that’s why I think the cooling pad is useful in temperature reduction during the stress test.
MSI Modern 14 Battery Life
The MSI Modern 14 Battery Life (Model B4MW laptop) has a 52Wh battery life.
It has lasted for 104 minutes during the continuous stress test and for 467 minutes while watching YouTube videos at 50% of screen brightness, with keyboard backlighting off, and background apps disabled.
Storage
Let me tell you that this MSI Modern 14 B4MW has 512GB of PCIe-based SSD storage. I have measured its speed and performance using CrystalDiskMark. CrystalDiskMark is a tool most popular for the measurement of storage performance.
You can see that it’s too fast at reading and writing. The reading speed is almost 1604MB/sec and the writing speed is almost 1033MB/sec.
Gaming Benchmarks

The MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop is an all-aluminium build laptop. Its design is really pretty attractive. The MSI Modern 14 is pretty brighter. But, the colour gamut is not up to the mark for use in professional photo and video editing. However, the display is perfectly fine for students, programmers, bloggers, content writers, and many others. The keyboard is pretty tactile. And, the touchpad is quite premium. The performance of this laptop is pretty amazing. I have tested several benchmark tools and this laptop has impressed me with all testing. In addition, the internals and thermal management of this MSI Modern 14 B4MW laptop are pretty good to prevent thermal throttling as much as possible. The camera and microphone are of average quality for video conferences. The down-firing speakers are pretty loud. The 512GB of SSD storage delivers too much reading and writing speed.
